HOME RUN DERBY II - RECAP

Saturday, August 25th at 6:30pm HomeRun Derby II to benefit the Schneider's Children Hospital got under way. Unlike the 1st derby a couple of weeks ago, the weather was perfect.

With the HR Derby growing in popularity, News12 was down to give the benefit a bit more exposure. Special thanks to Rob Furious for making this happen.

The 1st round consisted of 10 swings in a 5 minute time limit. If anybody stood out in this round, it had to be the show Joe DaSilva put on, 10 pitches, 10 balls deposited over the fence!

The following rounds went by rather quickly, as the field dwindled.

A few players brought their own pitchers, but it was mostly Kush and Leelum doing the majority of the pitching... Special thanks to those guys, their unselfishness was appreciated by all.

Clear stand outs were Brian "the Truth" Allen, Pistol Pete Santana, Matt Karlin, Brian Sheehy and Mike "Hollywood" Corda, but in the end Joe DaSilva and Mike Vitulli squared off in the Finals.

After a coin flip Mike V. was first up... After a slow start to the round, he picked it up and put a respectable 4 HRs on the board. The tension grew when Joe DaSilva came to the plate, he could easily hit 5 home runs but after a long muggy night did he have enough in his tank?... After hitting a couple out, Joe was down to his final swings and fell short. Congrats to Mike V. and thanks to everyone that made the event possible, after all the bills were paid, we raised over $1,500 for Schneider Children's hospital.

Very special thanks to Chrissy (Kush's girl) for the awesome scorekeeping.

See you next season... HR Derby III (April 2008)

HOME RUN DERBY I - RECAP

THE FINAL FOUR - Eddie B., Drew L., Pete S., Mike C.

Saturday, July 21st at 12:30pm the 1st Annual SoftballNut.com HR Derby kicked off under sunny skies and unfortunate wind blowing in. But the wind however did not hamper the HR festivities by any means.

A round of BP gave all the participants an opportunity to swing Don Mattingly's new softball stick with the "V" grip. All the participants picture cards were put into a hat and the 1st 3 names were drawn and the HR derby challenge got under way. The 1st round consisted of 12 swings in a 5 minute time limit. All rounds thereafter the swings were cut down to 9 to make sure time permitting would not be an issue.

A few players brought their own pitchers, otherwise Jimmy D, Kush, Rich N, Hamma and Leelum provided the meatballs. As the rounds went by and the field dwindled, things were starting to getting a bit interesting. Who would have enough strength, endurance and will power to be the last man standing. We saw some fellas who could really give that Blue Dot a ride but this was a marathon not a sprint. In the end the final 4 consisted of Eddie Bush, "Pistol" Pete Santana, Mike "Hollywood" Corda and Drew Ligarzewski.

Pistol Pete came out with 5 dingers, Hollywood Corda with 4 and on the last swing, Drew tied Hollywood to send the 3 of them into the finals. In the finals, Drew just put on a show and walked away with the 1st Battle of the Beast HR Derby trophy, congrats to Drew and all the participants for a wonderful display of power.

I want to thank all the sponsors, family and friends who helped keep the event flowing, especially Kush and Leelum for doing the majority of the pitching, Dom and Nick for doing the majority of the catching, Jimmy D. for donating a bunch of items, Mike S. for the awesome photos, and ABATom for a great job score keeping.
